The current rapid expansion in wind farms has prompted speculation as to their possible impacts on local weather and climate, particularly with the next generation of large wind farms with bigger turbines. A recent study by Zhou et al (2012) using satellite observations demonstrated the impact of several large wind farms in the USA on local night time minimum surface temperatures compared to surrounding areas. The study created a lot of interest in the media (NASA, BBC news).

They suggest that this is due to increased turbulence in a stable nocturnal boundary layer, mixing warmer air down and hence raising the surface temperature. Other modelling studies have suggested an impact of a large wind farm on local precipitation (Fiedler and Bukovsky, 2011), cloud formation (Emeis, 2010; see figure 1) and on gravity wave generation (Smith, 2009). It is still unclear what other impacts there might be, and how these impacts will depend on the size, layout and location of the wind farm.
