De bemoeienis van van de Rooms-Katholieke Kerk met de wetenschap heeft niet altijd goed uitgepakt. Het treffendste voorbeeld was natuurlijk de reactie op de opvattingen van Galileo Galilei, die had vastgesteld dat de aarde om de zon draaide in plaats van andersom.


In 1616 wordt hij door de Inquisitie veroordeeld voor ketterij en geloofsdwaling. Hij wordt gedwongen afstand te doen van zijn ontdekkingen. …


Galilei lapt het verbod aan zijn laars als hij in 1632 in Florence zijn Dialogo publiceert, een boek waarin duidelijk het heliocentrische wereldbeeld in gespreksvorm wordt verdedigd. In oktober van dat jaar moet hij weer voor de kerkelijke rechtbank in Rome verschijnen. Deze veroordeelt Galilei tot levenslang huisarrest en dwingt hem zijn leer voorgoed af te zweren. Galileï, 69 jaar oud, schijnt bij het aanhoren van zijn vonnis te hebben uitgeroepen: ‘Eppur si muove’, en toch beweegt zij (de aarde om de zon). …


In 1992 wordt de naam van Galileo Galilei gezuiverd als paus Johannes Paulus II namens de kerk een excuus uitspreekt en de astronoom wordt erkend als gelovig mens.

Maar deze frustrerende ervaring heeft de Paus er toch niet van kunnen weerhouden om zich de laatste jaren in de encycliek Laudato Si weer te profileren in een in wezen wetenschappelijke kwestie: klimaatverandering.


Hij werd daarin geholpen door een andere ‘Paus’: de Duitse klimaat’paus’, Hans-Joachim Schellnhuber, directeur van het Potsdam Institut für Klimafolgenforschung, de oerbron van het Duits klimaatalarmisme.

De directeur van het Duitse ‘Potsdam Institut für Klimafolgenforschung’ (PIK), Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, bijgenaamd de Duitse klimaatpaus, was de enige wetenschapper die deel uitmaakte van het team dat de nieuwe pauselijke encycliek, Laudato Si, presenteerde. Dat is opmerkelijk omdat hij nu niet bepaald een vertegenwoordiger is van de mainstream van de klimatologen, maar zelfs onder hen een extreem alarmistisch standpunt inneemt. Daardoor geldt hij zelfs binnen de mainstream als controversieel.


Opvallend dat de Paus deze zelfverklaarde agnost en voorstander van geboortecontrole als belangrijkste adviseur in klimaatzaken heeft gekozen en hem zelfs tot lid van de Pontificale Academie van Wetenschappen heeft benoemd. Schellnhuber’s wetenschappelijke publicaties behoren niet tot het beste wat de klimatologie heeft te bieden. Maar hij is een goed spreker/verteller en zijn boodschap – een cocktail van Club van Rome doemdenken, dreigende kantelpunten (tipping points) en Marxisme – gaat er bij het Vaticaan in als Gods woord in een ouderling … oeps, vergissing … in een priester.


Schellnhuber gaat er prat op grote invloed te hebben gehad op de inhoud van Laudato Si. In de FAZ rapporteerde Joachim Müller-Jung daarover:


Die Umweltenzyklika markiert für den Potsdamer Klimaforscher Hans Joachim Schellnhuber eine radikale, umweltpolitische Wende im Vatikan. Wie kaum ein zweiter war Schellnhuber von Anfang an am Zustandekommen der Enzyklika beteiligt, alle vier entscheidenden Treffen hat er mitgestaltet, zuletzt als Wortführer der etablierten Klimaforschung. Wir haben vor seiner heutigen Präsentation im Vatikan mit ihm über die Hintergründe des Zustandekommens dieses ersten grünen Lehrschreibens gesprochen. „Das ist für den Papst eine Art Regierungserklärung“, sagt Schellnhuber. ….


„Die Enzyklika wird enorme politische Wirkungen haben. Dieses Jahr wird die Weltbühne bereitet für die Lösung des Klimaproblems. Wir wissen noch nicht, ob es in Paris für ein ehrgeiziges Abkommen reichen wird oder ob es in die richtige Richtung geht am Ende, um das Problem zu lösen. Wir haben jetzt jedenfalls mächtig Rückenwind.“ Für ihn ist die Veröffentlichung der Papst-Schrift ein historisches Ereignis: „G-7-Gipfel gibt es jedes Jahr, eine Umweltenzyklika hat nun nach fast zweitausend Jahren römischer Kirche Premiere. Diese Schrift kann gar nicht unpolitisch sein.“


Tot zover wat ik eerder schreef.


Inmiddels weten we dat het klimaatkoord van Parijs een stukje politiek theater was en dat de uitvoering ervan op apegapen ligt.


Terzijde zij opgemerkt dat we laatste tijd niets meer horen van de koene planeetredder, Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, die in het verleden toch een veel-geïnterviewde lieveling van de Duitse media was. Misschien een indicatie dat in het licht van het fiasco van de Energiewende het gezond verstand terugkeert bij onze Oosterburen?


Maar de kritiek op de klimaatopvattingen van de RK Kerk kon natuurlijk niet uitblijven. Eerder schreef ik daarover:


Laudato Si, Laudato No


De nieuwe Pauselijke encycliek, die gisteren is verschenen, heeft inmiddels internationaal tot veel commentaren aanleiding gegeven, zowel instemmende als meer kritische. De prominente aandacht die de Paus aan het milieu en het klimaat schenkt (zij het niet meer dan enkele procenten van een tekst van bijna 200 bladzijden), waarbij hij in nauwelijks bedekte termen lobbyt voor een positieve uitkomst van de klimaatconferentie in Parijs in december dit jaar, heeft hem veel krediet bij de milieubeweging opgeleverd. Omgekeerd hebben de meer kritische commentatoren in dit verband fijntjes herinnerd aan de affaire Galileo Galilei, waarin de RK Kerk zich eveneens anti–wetenschappelijk opstelde.


Ik pik er enkele commentaren uit. …


Nigel Lawson, voormalig minister van Financiën onder Margaret Thatcher en voorzitter van de ‘Global Warming Policy Foundation’ (GWPF), liet zich uiterst kritisch uit over de houding van de RK Kerk tegenover het klimaat en het klimaatbeleid. Onder de titel, ‘Carbon week: The church of climatism’, schreef hij in de Canadese Financial Post:


Throughout the ages the weather has been an important part of the religious narrative.

Climate scientists and their hangers–on have become the high priests of a new age of unreason.

How is it that much of the Western world, and Europe in particular, has succumbed to the self-harming collective madness that is the climate change orthodoxy? It is difficult to escape the conclusion that climate change orthodoxy has in effect become a substitute religion, attended by all the intolerant zealotry that has so often marred religion in the past, and in some places still does so today.


Throughout the Western world, the two creeds that used to vie for popular support – Christianity and the atheistic belief system of Communism – are each clearly in decline. Yet people still feel the need both for the comfort and for the transcendent values that religion can provide. It is the quasi-religion of green alarmism and global salvationism, of which the climate change dogma is the prime example, that has filled the vacuum, with reasoned questioning of its mantras regarded as little short of sacrilege. ….


Hij stelt dat vele klimatologen zich als hogepriesters van een nieuw tijdperk van obscurantisme opstellen. Het beleid dat hieruit voortvloeit is in hoge mate immoreel, mede omdat het tot een massale overdracht van inkomen van arm naar rijk leidt via de subsidiëring van hernieuwbare energie.


I am slightly surprised that it is so strongly supported by those who consider themselves to be the tribunes of the people and politically on the Left. I refer to our system of heavily subsidizing wealthy landlords to have wind farms on their land, so that the poor can be supplied with one of the most expensive forms of electricity known to man.


However, the greatest immorality of all concerns those in the developing world. It is excellent that, in so many parts of the developing world – the so-called emerging economies – economic growth is now firmly on the march, as they belatedly put in place the sort of economic policy framework that brought prosperity to the Western world. Inevitably, they already account for, and will increasingly account for, the lion’s share of global emissions.


But, despite their success, there are still hundreds of millions of people in these countries in dire poverty, suffering all the ills that this brings, in terms of malnutrition, preventable disease, and premature death. Asking these countries to abandon the cheapest available sources of energy is, at the very least, asking them to delay the conquest of malnutrition, to perpetuate the incidence of preventable disease, and to increase the number of premature deaths.


Global warming orthodoxy is not merely irrational. It is wicked.

Maar indachtig het adagium, ‘Don’t confuse with the facts, I have made up my mind’, heeft Paus Franciscus zich niet laten afschrikken door de meest recente wetenschappelijke inzichten en waarnemingen, maar heeft hij zijn oorspronkelijke uitspraken krachtig herhaald. Hij heeft zelfs vertegenwoordigers van oliemaatschappijen op het matje geroepen om hen vermanend toe te spreken. Secularisatie heeft ons een scheiding van kerk en staat gebracht. Maar de Paus moet hebben gedacht dat dat niet voor de kerk en de oliemaatschappijen gold.


Reden voor Lord Christopher Monckton om weer eens in de pen te klimmen om uit te leggen hoe de vork nu werkelijk in de steel steekt.

What is more, Your Holiness proclaimed that “we have collectively failed to listen to the fruits of scientific analysis, and doomsday predictions can no longer be met with irony or disdain.”


Well, I have listened carefully, and I can inform Your Holiness that science is divided on the climate question. A small number of totalitarian profiteers of doom in various self-serving national academies have issued pompous statements about it, but a large number of papers from reputable scientists, and a larger amount of hard data, suggest that global warming is and will continue to be a non-event.


Consider the warming from 1850-2011. It was just 0.75 degrees, equivalent to 1 degree of warming in response to doubled CO2concentration. That is less than a third of the 3.35 degrees that is the totalitarian scientists’ grossly inflated midrange prediction.


The totalitarians got the science wrong. They made a strikingly elementary error of physics. They forgot the Sun was shining. So they misallocated the feedback response to the Sun, erroneously counting it as part of the feedback response to greenhouse gases. Their predictions should be one-third of their current midrange estimates.


What that means, Your Holiness, is that the global warming that will happen between now and the exhaustion of accessible resources of coal, oil and gas will be small, slow, harmless and net-beneficial.
